Chapter Twelve

Luke dropped his paperback book onto the nightstand and sighed. He was exhausted after the long day at the farmers market, but he couldn’t relax despite the late hour. Everything was taken care of—his inbox was cleared of new emails, he’d ironed his clothes for tomorrow…hell, he’d even flossed and used fluoride mouthwash, yet sleep still proved elusive.

And he knew why.

Charlotte.

Was she awake too? Was she thinking about him, about how she’d helped him today in the booth? Luke stared at the bedroom door. Right behind that wooden panel, across the span of the hall, and through her door existed all her thoughts, her feelings, her skin, her lips…her heart.

He slumped back on his bed and threw his arm over his face. He was so pathetically obsessed, he was practically a meme.

Luke shook his head. For a moment there in the booth, he thought she was going to let him flop.

And truth be told, he wouldn’t have blamed her.

He’d been a grade A asshole to her in the beginning, and he hadn’t deserved her help with the customers. And yet she’d given it willingly.

The thought caused something in his chest to swell. This was a competition. He knew, just as she did, what was on the line. When your opponent failed, you won. But she’d helped him anyway.

He heard a faint murmur of someone speaking. He sat up in bed and turned toward the door so he could hear better. It was Charlotte’s voice, followed by brief pauses. Perhaps she was on the phone.

After a few minutes, there was silence, suggesting her call was over. But now he knew that she was awake. She was awake and right across the hall.

Luke pulled on a T-shirt and yanked open his door before he could overthink and second-guess and turn stiff like soft gold tempered with hard alloy metals.

Luke tapped on Charlotte’s door. No noise came from her room. He waited, his heart pounding.

At last, he heard the soft fall of her footsteps. The doorknob turned.

The pinch in his chest eased at the sight of Charlotte in the doorway. Her hair was loose and mussed, her face soft and glowing without any makeup. She was dressed in a white tank top and little gray shorts—perhaps the female equivalent of the plaid pajama bottoms and T-shirt he was wearing. His eyes caught on her breasts, the faint outline of her nipples visible through the thin material of her top. The blood in his veins heated. She crossed her arms over her chest, and he jerked his head up.

“Sorry,” he murmured, his face hot. Why did he always end up behaving like a horndog or an ass when he was around her?

“It’s late.” She eyed him speculatively.

“I was hoping to talk to you.” He inhaled. “And you’d said you wanted to talk to me about something?” He waited, hating this feeling of uncertainty.

Their eyes met and held. Something passed between them, a feeling of connection, of wanting. Her warm-brown eyes grew hot as her gaze roamed his face, over his chest, down his body.
